8 Steps to getting through a CPS investigation.

CPS

  1. Know your rights and contact an lawyer immediately.
  2. Don’t avoid contact with the CPS investigator and let them “lay eyes” on your children. They will go get a court order if they are not able to see the children. Please note that the law allows them to see all children subject to an investigation.
  3. Be polite and don’t panic
  4. Talk to your friends and Family in order to create a backup plan or multiple backup plans in case CPS wants you to be supervised or they want to place outside of the home. CPS will remove children from the home and place them in foster care if you don’t have Friends or Family Members to help with supervision. If the allegations are serious, they will not be bluffing if they require you to be supervised.
  5. Document all contact with the investigator. You can record the interview
  6. Be proactive about creating a backup plan and working services.
  7. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.
  8. Always remember, your words are evidence and everything you say to a CPS investigator/caseworker can and will be used against you.

Finally, please always remember that if you are a parent in this situation, It is your right to say that you would like to consult an attorney.
